Crisper Challenge Response

Last week, Mrs. Q issued a challenge to her readers to take a picture of their crisper and post it on their blogs. So, after I finished washing and cutting our fresh produce for the week on Saturday, I snapped a photo of our fridge and the pantry. So, here we go.

Starting from the top left: bell pepper, celery, cherries, leftover English peas, leftover corn, apples, oranges, onion, spinach, and potatoes. That's fairly normal for our crisper aside from the absence of carrots and the addition of the cherries. They were a really good price this week, and I couldn't pass them up.

I didn't snap a picture of the freezer. All our meat and an additional few bags of frozen broccoli, mixed vegetables, strawberries, and snow peas are in there. I mostly keep the stuff we use in almost everything, or that doesn't freeze well in the refrigerator. Since produce looses it's nutritional value so quickly, if we won't be using it within two days or so, I freeze it.

Okay, so on to the pantry. Once again, starting from the top left: canister of ground flax seed, whole wheat flour, peanut butter, tuna, canned peas, corn, and tomatoes (to supplement the fresh ones from our garden), dried pinto beans, dried black beans, rice, whole wheat pastas, oatmeal, saltines, gram crackers, and raisins.

I know you can't really see the bags of beans in this picture. They kind of got hidden by the doors, and cropped out as a result.

I'm anxious to see if we can cut down on the number of cans, replacing them with jars of vegetables from our home garden, homemade marinara, and maybe some fruit butters. We'll need to do a autumn plot prep this year though if we want our plants to have any hope of not being overtaken with weeds before we can tell the sprouts from the grass like happened with all but our tomato plants this year.

  1. Please tell me you cleaned your fridge before you took these photos? It's so cleeeeean. I'm jealous!
    and ashamed. so very ashamed.

I have MANY veggies and fruit, but they're all over the place in the fridge.

  2. LOL, actually I did. I'm no Martha Stewart by any stretch of the imagination, but I am trying to adopt a habit of tossing out any leftovers more than a couple days old and wipe out the fridge just before I go grocery shopping each week. And I try to clean out the pantry about once a month, so we never end up opening something to find it's expired. The day I took the pictures just so happened to be a day or so after these coincided.

Our food budget is kinda tiny, which helps keeping the fridge looking clean, but can make it a bit difficult to eat the way we want to sometimes.
